1st week:
Making Our Marks – Students will be introduced to traditional and non-traditional mark-making tools in order to explore the range of possibilities for self-expression. We will also discuss the principles of color theory, so that students can be more familiar with concepts like hue, mixing, and palette and thereby achieve their desired visual effect. In this week’s exploratory exercises on paper, participants will play – crafting experimental designs to become acquainted with a variety of tools and colors and learning how many possibilities are available to them. We will design and create a working journal for our first creative project, and these journals will house our paper exercises. This will help the participants feel self-assured with the tools explored and their color choices.
Skills taught:
• Identifying and using a range of tools for mark making
• Understanding color theory
• Designing and constructing an art journal
• Developing strategies for experimental mark making, design, and visual self-expression
2nd week:
Exploring Further Possibilities -- The class will be introduced to the range of painting and design options available through gels, mediums, and pastes. Students will design a variety of examples on paper, both to establish their familiarity with these media, and to serve as a reference for their week 4 painting exercise. We will explore collage techniques and will experiment with these to enhance the working journal by adding new samples. These added skills will help build participants’ confidence by expanding their expressive tools.
Skills taught:
• Recognizing the qualities of various painting media
• Learning the advantages and disadvantages of using different gels, paints, pastes, etc. for a desired visual effect
• Understanding the importance of experimentation and practice for achieving a desired visual effect
• Practicing collage techniques in order to access hidden or unexpected visual self-expression
3rd week:
The Artist as Writer -- The class will select poetry phrases to be used as inspiration for our paintings and other visual art. We will generate reflective strategies for creative writing, and in this way, we will refine our vision for our painting. Poetry phrases and ephemera can be collaged into our working journals as an additional strategy for refining and consolidating our ideas.
Skills taught:
• Identifying poetic text for use in collage and other art
• Finding language in published poetry that suits our visual approach to self – expression
• Using writing prompts and freewriting to explore our creativity
• Generating a vocabulary that accurately expresses our own poetic vision
4th week:
Exploring the Canvas – We will explore composition and design by preparing a canvas background for a 16” x 20” composition. With all the previous exercises on their working journals, participants now have a working knowledge of how to proceed with their canvas creation, and we will focus our energy on designing and painting our canvas. In the final class we will discuss the challenges of the inner critic and explore strategies for remaining positive and forward thinking.

Graceful Blossom Ink & Wash Brush Painting Workshop
Participants will learn how to paint the thriving peonies with the ancient ink and wash technique with Dr. Yufeng Wang, professor and award-winning artist in Dayton. Originated in China, the auspicious peony flower symbolizes grace, prosperity, good luck, and lasting Spring. The goal of ink and wash painting is not simply to reproduce the appearance of the subject, but to capture its soul.
The program is free but limited to 20 people. For ages 10 and up. Supplies are provided.
About Dr. Yufeng Wang: I am a professor and a Chinese brush painting artist. My artwork desires to create a sense of peace and harmony in nature and humanity. My paintings received many awards and are in the collection of numerous institutions. My underglaze painting “Four Seasons” received first place in the Dayton Painters and Sculptors show in 2015. My artwork “Li River” was awarded the Burnell Roberts Purchase Award in 2015 and is in the permanent collection of Sinclair College. I am the featured artist in the current Art Exhibition at the Springboro Performing Arts Center, March 2023. 2012, Wright State University held personal art exhibitions for me, Seasons in Harmony, showcasing 26 pieces of my ink and wash paintings. Recently, University of Dayton commissioned me to make a ceramic sculpture with underglaze painting, Love and Grace, which is a Chinese rendering of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. With ancient Chinese dress, underglaze painting of roses, and the traditional character of Love as a centerpiece of decoration, the sculpture conveys universal love, grace, and tranquility.
I have enjoyed sharing Chinese art and made many art presentations and workshops in the community and local schools. They included workshops at the Dayton Association of Artists, Dayton Metro Public Library, Cincinnati Art Museum, Dayton Miami Valley Schools, Wright State University, Sinclair College, the Dayton Business and Technology High School, Dayton Woman’s Club, the 2022 Dayton Art in the City Event, and more.
